The Prescription Charge Schemes

There are two schemes. One for private prescriptions and one for medical card prescriptions. If you are a medical card holder and are given a private prescription, you can bring it to your doctor and have it re-written on medical card stationary.
Drug Payments Scheme (DPS) Monthly
The Minister for Health has set the threshold, above which the State pays for expenditure by families or individuals on prescribed medicines for use within one calender month.
Threshold Payment €124 with effect from 1 April 2019
GMS Scheme
Prescription Levy. Pharmacists are obliged, by law, to collect the levy on every item dispensed on medical card prescriptions.
From 1st April 2019, the Prescription Levy is €1.50 per item for patients over 70 years and their dependents. the monthly cap for an individual or family is €15.
The Prescription Levy is €2.00 per item for all other patients. The monthly cap for an individual or family is €20.
